Spring/Summer 2012: Daisy Chain

Summer may feel like an age away, but with Christmas gone and the days getting longer, we've got a Spring in our step as we look forward to all the gorgeous styles that are set to define the sunnier seasons this year. As always, our eyes were glued to the catwalks last autumn as we discerned the delicious trends to emerge for SS12 and, as always, there were countless references to vintage fashion, meaning there's an unending amount of inspiration to be found at Beyond Retro. Our first key theme is a look we like to call Daisy Chain. Summer 2012 is all about rolling out of bed and dancing in the daisy field, dressed in an ensemble paying tribute to the femininity of '60s flower power and '90s grunge. The two eras combine to create the modern hippy, taking 'scruffy chic' to a new, feminine level: it's Courtney Love, but a whole lot cleaner. Naturally, floral prints are the order of the season. More was decidedly more on the SS12 catwalks, with many of the shows giving the sensation of stepping into an English garden. Designers such as Erden, Ashish and Mary Katrantzou showcased clashing flowery prints on everything, from blazers to blouses teamed with shorts and trousers. In short, don't be caught short with your floral collection this Summer.

Last year's long silhouette remains strong in 2012, with the maxi shape dominating this season's hippy aesthetic. Dresses and skirts with floor-sweeping hems can be worn in lace or floral as a statement of femininity or with block colours and sheer fabrics to explore the grungier elements of this theme.

For all the bright and bold florals sent down the SS12 runways, the ditsy print plays an equally important part in this blossoming look, with daintily decorated playsuits remaining a summer staple in any self-respecting fashionista's wardrobe.

If Daisy Chain seems a little too feminine for your tastes so far, then you'll be pleased to see us veer off course into Tomboy town, where cropped, tummy-bearing tees, cut-off dungarees and military jackets create a strong impression redolent of Rihanna in her We Found Love video.

And lastly, this summery infatuation wouldn't be summery at all without revealing a little flesh. Recreate collections from the likes of Dior, Sacai and Fendi with sheer panels and lace detailing for a more vampish take on the look. See-through is the name of the game, but wearing this style needn't be an all-out act of bravery - whimsical layering for the less daring dresser offers an equally chic approach to the look.
