Beyond Retro Brick Lane
Open for over a decade, Beyond Retro’s Cheshire Street location started life as an East End dairy factory. Don’t believe us? Look out for the slanted floor at the front of the shop and see that this was once an entrance for cows rather than customers!
Located just off the iconic Brick Lane, little Cheshire Street houses a number of historically significant buildings. The pub across the road (The Carpenters Arms) has a notorious past: it was once owned by the Kray Twins, and was a stomping ground for East London’s most wanted. Cheshire Street is also home to the UK’s oldest boxing club (Repton Boxing Club est. 1884), which went on to produce numerous British and World Champions including Maurice Hope, Billy Walker and Audley Harrison, not to mention the infamous gangster “Mad” Frankie Fraser.
The store has something even more unique about it than the building and location: it is home to Beyond Retro's shop cat! Tiny has lived in the store nearly her whole life: ever since she moved away from her brothers and sisters just up the road at Lik & Neon on Sclatter Street. Tiny has been featured on numerous blogs and in a variety of publications. She is currently writing her memoires.
Not just famous cats frequent our Cheshire Street location, this shop also plays host to numerous celebrity customers: from Rihanna to Gilbert & George, from Jarvis Cocker to members of TOWIE, Beyond Retro Cheshire Street is definitely a celebrity hotspot! This shop also looks after high fashion clientele, as our press department is based within these walls. Be sure to keep an eye out for garments that have graced the cover of Vogue or have been worn by Lady Gaga when you are shopping here!
