Vintage Movie Series: The King and I

Posted on March 02 2009

Dreaming of warmer weather is a great February pastime. All the exotic places one could visit. Perhaps India or Thailand? The English have had some interesting adventures in Thailand... The King and I opened at the St. James Theatre on March 29th 1951, and ran for 1246 performances. In 1956 the visually stunning movie of the same name was made with Yul Brynner reprising his role. Lovely, romantic and grand, it has lasted the test of time and is still being staged in theatres around the world to this day. The cost of the film was ten times more than that of the original lavish Broadway production, well worth it once you consider the results: Take inspiration for your next night out straight from Anna Leonowens wardrobe, or even the Kings!
