Vintage Fashion: The 1950s

Posted on September 16 2011

Last week we gave you our pick of the best 1940s pieces and now we jump and jive to a time where Rock n’ Roll exploded on the airwaves and young people began to rule the world; the 1950s. The 1950s had a very definitive look that reflected the emerging emancipation of a younger generation. This booming group of teenager’s would adapt trends from each other rather than their elders resulting in a fresh style of dressing. Gone were the days of austerity and uncertainty; the USA now dominated culture with their new found security that spurred not only innovative music and art, but fashion too. Unlike the boxy shapes of the 1940s, the '50s celebrated female fragility with more fluid textures and delicate features. Prom skirts were much more girlish than their pencil predecessors, but femininity was still key with a resurgence of corsetry that emphasized the bust and nipped in the waist.  Key items for this era are full skirted dresses, dainty knitwear and pretty accessories.  So have a gander at our suggestions on recreating this iconic look…
