The Ultimate Y2K Party Guide

Posted on November 13 2018

There has undoubtedly been a no bigger party in recent history than New Year's Eve 1999, when the world braced itself for the dawn of a new millennium, both excited to see what the change would bring but partially terrified from all the conspiracy theories. With the nineties to noughties look on peak trend and artists like Charli XCX and Brockhampton both celebrating the final year of last century in their recent releases, there’s no better time for a Millennium Bug themed party than now. We’ve come up with a few tips and tricks to make it a celebration to remember.

The Y2K Look for a 00s themes party

For Her

Channel your inner Bratz doll or Groovy Chick with a Y2K makeover. Crop tops, mesh long sleeves, sparkly mini dresses, select sportswear styles and A-line skirts are all game. Footwear entails glam strappy heels all the way down to chunky trainers, but don’t be afraid to mix and match. Accessorise with statement scrunchies, plastic belts and hoops!

For Him

Think obvious designer brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. Smart shirts in shiny fabrics and bold graphic prints and loose fitting trousers is THE style to aim for. Accessorise with little sunglasses and layer with a rave-worthy puffa coat or even one of those leather jackets you saw your Dad wearing in childhood photos.

Make a 00s Playlist

Absolutely no event is complete without music and it’s the best way to amp up the early noughties vibes with some cheesy pop and R&B classics! Sure you could just type ‘1999’ into Spotify but here are some choice bangers we think you should slip into your own playlist:

  1. Say You’ll Be There - The Spice Girls
  2. Freestyler - Bomfunk MCs
  3. Will 2k - Will Smith
  4. Better Off Alone - Alice Deejay
  5. I’m Outta Love - Anastacia
  1.  Feel It - The Tamperer feat. Maya
  2. Genie In A Bottle - Christina Aguilera
  3. Praise You - Fatboy Slim
  4. Bills, Bills, Bills - Destiny’s Child
  5. I See You Baby - Groove Armada
  6. Do You Really Like It? - DJ Pied Piper & The MCs
  7. Sweet Like Chocolate - Shanks & Bigfoot
  8. Body Movin’ - The Beastie Boys
  9. The Beat Goes On - All Seeing I
  10. 1999 - Prince obviously...

The Decs and All The Rest

1999 Balloon

Let everyone know what the deal is in the most obvious way possible, with a big sign that says 1999! You can easily grab balloon versions of these from your local party store but making a DIY version yourself out of cardboard and tin foil is completely fine too.

Sparkly Curtains

Nothing says NYE like cheap decorations and a silver wall of foil curtain is exactly the Millennium Bug vibe you’ll need. Mix and match with party poppers, streamers, whistles and all the rest for that spectacularly tacky throwback feel.

Alcopops

One of the biggest things to come out of the 90s and stick were alcopops. These fun coloured, candy tasting, lightly alcoholic bevs were brand new to the decade and no party would be complete without some. For extra points, make your own vodka jelly for guests to get messy on!

Disposable Cameras

Selfies weren’t really a thing in 1999 so the iPhone look won’t go down too well. Consider buying a couple of disposable cameras to pass round the party, you’ll never know what will end up coming back. Then you can have the genuine experience of having to get them developed at Snappy Snaps and also some great prints.

Once you’ve spiced up your life with the right decor, ‘fit and more; now you just need to invite everyone over. Though Facebook wasn’t around until about six years later, it’s still essential to create the invite to get everyone to show up, otherwise you’ll be left drinking WKD on your own come midnight.
