Remember, remember! The fifth of November, the gunpowder treason and plot; so for you we have knits with furs, slouchy of fluffy, plus leathers and woolens, the lot. Yep, it's Bonfire night! While some turn up to watch the local fireworks and huddle round the fire as a dummy of the main man himself is burnt, it's often thought that the celebration is forgotten, hidden in the shadows of Americanised events such as Halloween. But here at Beyond Retro, we are all for a Firework Night revival! That nostalgic smell of bonfires, noses tickled pink by the crisp November air, sparklers in hand and fireworks crackling above your head, "oooooo ahhhh". Feelin' chilly yet? Well feel chilly no more, as Beyond Retro bring you the cosiest winter warmers. You're welcome.

The history of this annual event began in 1605 when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives beneath the House of Lords. Only months later this had became an annual holiday, and for much of the 17th and 18th century it carried religious overtones, used in a hate war against the Catholics. Then along came the Victorians who pushed the event to the margins of society, becoming exclusively for working-class children and beggars. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the masses reclaimed Firework Night as a day of celebration. Nowadays, whether its the beleaguering health and safety systems or less community spirit, the night is arguably on the decline. However, people are taking the night into their own hands and creating modern rituals such as the replacing of Guy with modern celebrities and politicians (anyone seen the Lance Armstrong dummy?) Maybe it's less a case of the story being marginalised, and more of a modernisation in which the spectacle remains.
So head out and celebrate Guy Fawkes Night, but don't forget to layer up with our pick of vintage knits.
