New York Fashion Week Day 6

Posted on February 15 2012

There’s something about Oscar de la Renta that no Carrie Bradshaw fan doesn’t swoon over.  Remember that moment in Paris where she falls asleep in and amongst the tulle layers in that beaut of a dress?  Or when she passes out trying to (embarrassingly) dance in public in that magenta prom number?  Then she decides to go to McDonalds?  Be still our beating hearts.  So we were overjoyed when we caught sight of the legend’s New York show with 62 (62!!) beautiful outfits. It starts with monochromatic delights, with brocade print, fur tippets and dresses adorned with what looks like hundreds of diamond chandelier earrings.  The colour then shifts to pretty pastels with these Park Avenue princesses strutting their stuff in skirt suits and alice bands, as well as the odd Mad Men diva with funnel neck collars and cocoon shaped coats.  Those chandelier earrings then blow up into glorious prints placed upon sky blue dresses and full skirts, as well as boucle tweed featuring on outerwear.  The key for de la Renta is opulence and he doesn’t disappoint.  Particularly with the evening wear, when chiffon layers spill over the side of the catwalk.  If we were millionaires, we’d order two of everything.  But these vintage inspired looks are easily replicable; keep an eye out for two piece skirt suits, pastel shirt dresses and cute twinsets.  And who would have thunk that fishnets would look so chic?  Although it may take a certain kind of de la Renta lady to pull that one off…  Sigh.
