Meet the Professionals: The Company Fash Team Edit!

Posted on March 13 2014

There ain't no partay like a vintage party. Now, we may have borrowed the rhyme from the lyrical genius' of SClub 7 circa 1999, but the sentiment remains. If last night was anything to go by, we put on a darn good party! Still not had your fill? No we don't mean the pancakes, though we'd gladly devour another of those bad boys to fight the post-party blues, we're talking more from this lovely lot at Company mag! We met up with the team to chat careers, shopping and vintage...here's what went down.

edit together

Let us set the scene. It was 17:30 on a nippy Wednesday evening in March and the sun had set on a long day at the office. With that in mind, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was time to head home to a hearty meal and a bath... no time to start shopping. But you'd be wrong. It was only just getting started for the Company fash team, who swooped into our Brick Lane store and began filling their arms with garb! They riffled and they rummaged to pick outfits from our teaming rails, selecting the crème de la crème of gems; a true passion for vintage from the gals at our favourite monthly mag.

I'm Laura, Fashion Stylist.

edit 2

I shoot main fashion stories, coming up with the concept from start to finish, styling and producing the shoots and rising music stars! I also write for the fashion pages, go on radio and also do video hauls. My job is really diverse, I'm always out and about and never in the office!!!

How did you bag such an amazing job?

I did a year long course at LCF when I was 19. This covered styling, photography and history etc etc. I then went into buying for 7 years on and off as a junior buyer, so I have always been in fashion. I then went to the other side, the more creative side which I have loved since I was 16 and asissted a stylist for a year doing editorial and web styling with a few titles before Company... then a job came up! It was the right place at the right time but I also worked my butt off!!! If you want to work in fashion it's all about showing willing, working hard and being one step ahead of the game- all with a smile on your face! Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, as it's not as glam as you think!

What's the best thing about working in fashion?

Working with such amazing clothes and also working with so many different creative people and seeing the end result! Part of my job is very much a people based job, you need to be able to work with so many different people. I'm really lucky to get to do what I love every day.

Describe your style:

I am a bit of a rock chic at heart. Mixed in with a bit of boho, laid back LA/Swedish vibes- depends what mood I'm in! But rest assured I am always wearing leather in some form or another!

Who is your style icon?

I don't have one as such, I like to take elements and make them my own. I love the Olsen twins, Kate Moss (she can't go wrong), Swedish blogger Fanny Lyckmann and Caroline Roxy.

What’s hot this season?

1- Pool Sliders are everywhere, you def need a pair of these and the classic Birkie! Both are massive!

2-  Also denim, whether it be ripped or patched!

3- The bomber! make sure you have this in your wardrobe- go sports or printed!

What do you love about vintage?

Unique, one offs! I don't like looking the same as everyone else and I love the fact that no one will ever have the same piece of clothing. I have a whole box of vintage at home and my mannequins at home are wearing vintage too, they love it ;)

I'm Sarah Barlow: Fashion Assistant at Company magazine.

How did you bag such a fab job?

After studying Fashion Communication at university I interned my butt off for tonnes of magazines and stylists; fortunately, Oonagh saw some potential in me and hired me full time at Company last year!

What's the best thing about working in fashion?

As well as being surrounded by the most amazing clothes and shoes all the time, it's the people! There's this big perception that you have to be nasty and bitchy to work in this industry but thankfully its quite rare that you'll come across this - my colleagues and the people I have met through work and uni are some of the funnest, friendliest, coolest & creative (of course!) people I've ever known.

Describe your style...

Bohemian with a bit of an edge.

Who is your style icon?

I have three! Abbey Lee Kershaw, Kate Lanphear and Stevie Nicks

What 3 things can you not live without in your wardrobe?

A vintage band tee, black leather /suede heeled ankle boots and a fringed embellished kimono.

What's hot this season?

Pineapples seem to be cropping up everywhere - you can find them in the form of everything from buttons to earrings plus they are pretty much printed on..well everything! It's not something I would usually go for but it's such a quirky and kitsch summery trend!

If we could only buy 3 things this season , what should we be looking for?

1- Culottes are 'the' trouser shape of the season so you should definitely invest in a pair of those!

2- White denim

3- A pair of pool slider sandals.

What do you love about vintage?

I always look to past decades for inspiration, particularly the 60s and 70s, so wearing something that has once been part of a previous time and has been loved once already too is pretty cool don't ya think!?

I am Oonagh, the Fashion Director at Company magazine.

Company-Edit-2

I am responsible for all the fashion content in the mag!

How did you get such an amazing job?

I interned for years until I got my lucky break!

Describe your style:

Classic, clean, with a french twist

Who's your style icon?

Jane Burkin when she was young and Kate Bosworth!

What 3 things can you not live without in your wardrobe?

1- Jeans

2- Heeled ankle boots

3- A lace top of any kind! My obsession!

What trends are you loving this season?

I'm loving white, lace and summer leather! Plus the draped frill hem!

If we could only buy 3 things this season what should we look for?

1- A nude pencil skirt

2- Stella Marcartney frill hem satin dress

3- A pair of faded vintage blue 'Frame' skinny jeans!

What do you love about vintage?

Orginality, nobody else will have it!

I'm Fiona the Acting Fashion Ed at Company.

Company-edit-3

The main part of my job is shooting the main fashion stories you see in the mag!

How did you get such an amazing job?

Interning.  I interned at 3 titles before getting my 1st job as a fashion assistant.

What's the best thing about working in fashion?

Getting to work with such amazing clothes and getting to see them all first!

Describe your style:

Minimal

Who is your style icon?

Lou Doillon & Clemence Posey

What 3 things can you not live without in your wardrobe?

Breton tops, a good pair of jeans and a boyish overcoat- boring I know!

What's hot this season?

Statement florals. I loved the flower print sweaters at Christopher Kane!

If we could only buy 3 things this season what should we be looking for?

Sliders, Sporty bombers and anything high shine.

You heard it here first... don your pool sliders. Ready, set, shop!
