Why We Still Celebrate Pride in 2019

Posted on July 01 2019

At Beyond Retro, we aim to protect and elevate the voices of the LGBTQ+ community through everything we do. We are proud to represent a diverse team, in our stores, our warehouse and our head office.

Pride is a subject matter we hold very close to our hearts, and its spirit runs through everything that we do. In honour of pride month, we present to you our reasons as to why pride is as relevant in 2019 as it was in 1969, how to do pride the Beyond Retro way, and invite you into our stores which will always, always be a safe space, not just in the month of June.

How To Celebrate Pride

Unfortunately, for members of the LGBTQ+ community pride was not given. Pride was not discovered, pride was not celebrated, but pride was fought for and earned. This year marks the 50th year since the Stonewall riots, which is widely seen as the catalyst for modern-day pride events.

Most people by now know the history of Stonewall, which was a riot predominantly led by trans and gender non-conforming people of colour, sex workers and poor people. Many members of the LGBTQ+ community face the same conditions today, meaning pride in 2019 is as important as ever. The rate of violence against transgender women continues to rise, and recently in London, we saw a same-sex lesbian couple suffer a hate crime. We must celebrate pride in spite of all this.

We like to look at the brighter side, this year we have celebrated a series of firsts: the first openly gay album in India, the first same-sex marriage law in Asia, the first openly gay state governor in the U.S.A and the announcement that the British sex education curriculum will become LGBTQ+ inclusive.

It is these things that are worth celebrating through pride, and we would like to invite you to celebrate with us!

Celebrate Pride With Us!

This year's pride parade is held on Saturday 6th of July, and it means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Pride represents diversity, celebration, community and activism. All of which are values we celebrate, too. The parade runs through central London, starting at Portland Palace and making its way through Regent Street, Piccadilly and Oxford Circus - that’s where we are!

This year, to celebrate pride, we are hosting a FREE eco-friendly glitter makeover pop up with Eco Glitter Fun in our Soho store! Come join us on Saturday 6th July from 12.00 - 2.00pm, where we will offer a sustainable way to get yourself glammed up for pride celebrations and feel like your best self. This is a first come first served free event, so head down early to avoid disappointment!

Pride, The Beyond Retro Way

Many corporations are now marketing to members of the LGBTQ+ community during pride month, and we believe that this presence doesn't have to be interpreted as negative. This presence is a symbol of the social, economic and political power members of the LGBTQ+ community have gained. It is a reflection of the ground the movement has gained, and an emphasis on exactly why we should celebrate pride - that it works!

At Beyond Retro, we aim to be inclusive to all our customers year round, not just during pride celebrations. From the monthly queer-inclusive party Polyglamorous we are a part of in Brighton, the LGBTQ+ icons we celebrate and the members of the community we are proud to employ, Beyond Retro celebrates pride every day.
