As the home of our original flagship store and our Dalston outpost, the East London fashion scene is near and dear to our retro hearts and an endless source of style inspiration for the entire Beyond Retro team. So of course we were super-duper excited to see the unique fashion flavour of our home turf celebrated in East End Fashionistas, a thrilling new street style book out now by Thames & Hudson.
In portrait after portrait, photographer Anthony Webb manages to capture all the wit and sartorial whimsy that makes East London such an expressive canvas of original style for people of all ages. From vintage hipsters to new-wave punks and everything in between, the creative spirit is alive and kicking in these truly individual looks, often rooted in the threads of yesteryear (and we like to think, often found on Beyond Retro shop floors!)
Shot largely on and around Brick Lane, Webb's portraits of men and women both young and old are juxtaposed with graffiti-ed gospel spotted around the neighborhood and quotes by icons of British fashion from Vivienne Westwood to Alexander McQueen. Amongst this fine fashion fray we couldn't help but notice a few familiar Beyond Retro faces, from a one-time visual merchandiser to fashion historian Amber Butchart, who was our first-ever Archive manager. Whether you're looking for style inspiration or simply enjoy the documentary nature of modern street photography, this collection of conversation-starting images is great one to add to the coffee table and a future relic of London life in the early 2010s.
