Beyond Retro Loves Silverscreen Suppers!

Posted on June 24 2010

I left the house in a rush this morning, feeling peckish. I could smell the sweet, heartwarming scent of maple syrup from the kitchen, so knew I was missing out on pancake stacks and crispy bacon (my housemate is American and never does breakfast by halves!) but I consoled myself that at least I would fit into my summer hotpants! Still, thirty minutes later, cocooned on an overcrowded Northern Line, I wished I’d chosen food over fashion! I was starving and I certainly didn’t care about having a film star shape! Flashback forty years or more however and my screen siren status would have been sealed if, actually, I had helped myself to pancakes, bacon, syrup and then seconds too! Back in the day, movie-goers biggest treat may have been to see that impossible glamour and megastar beauty could only be achieved by those who EAT! And to prove this, we introduce the uber-edible (in an ‘I Love You’ kind of way!) website in celebration of Silver Screen Suppers! Compiled by hip film archivists Jenny Hammerton (she of Shellac Sister DJ fame!) and Caroline Frick Page, the site serves up a mouth-watering menu of culinary classics. Think spiced beef and peas ain’t hot? You will when you see how it was served up by that wavy-haired wayward temptress, Ms Veronica Lake! Or how about some off-the-wall ‘Watermelon Pickles’ from bathing suit beauty, Betty Grable. It’s a tasty, intimate trek through starsville, from a time when some mystery still surrounded the stars. Everyone from Bette Davis to Diana Dors is included, and it goes from spicy to sweet! Just like the stars themselves, I guess! Check it out at www.silverscreensuppers.comLook! Wavy Gravy hair on Veronica Lake!
Funnyman Stan made a great Yorkshire Pudding!
Wonder if he stole those pasta tubes from the poor!
