In case you hadnt already noticed, we here at Beyond Retro love festival season, as it gives us the perfect chance to dig out our best camping threads. With Bestival now in its 10th year and celebrating with a birthday spectacular this September 5th-8th, we thought wed bring you a special Bestival fashion edit to help you get ready for the one of the highlights of the festival calendar. More than just a music festival, Bestival ensures that every year they get the creative cogs of festival-goers turning by giving them a fancy dress theme. Poised in the art of dressing up to get down, Bestival fans never disappoint, donning wigs and warpaint to meet the incredibly high standards that their partying predecessors have set. Bestival love dressing up so much that theyve even released a book about it, titled Bestival Presents The Art of Dressing Up, a visual delight capturing costumes as high art. Curator Rob da Bank says of the festivals adventurous attitude towards style: I dont know what it is about the British. Fancy dress and getting dressed up in eccentric, ridiculous and just plain stylish regalia seem to go hand in hand with our seldom-seen show-off nature ... and nowhere is that more evident than at our beloved Bestival. Those wishing to perfect the craft of costuming can enjoy a foreword by long-time Bestival fan Lily Allen, as well as stunning studio portraits of the most imaginative looks shot by Kent Matthews and Dan Smith during past themes Outer Space and Fantasy. This year its all about being nautical but nice, as HMS Bestival gets set to drop its anchor on the Isle of Wight. Swashbuckling sartorialists will be able to get down to the sounds of headliners Snoop Dogg, Elton John and Fatboy Slim. Alternatively, channel your inner Ariel and work the mermaid look while catching one of an abundance of heavyweight acts such as The Knife, M.I.A., The Flaming Lips and Annie Mac Presents. Tattooed ladies, sailors and sea monsters alike should all make sure they check out the best cutting edge music that Bestival has to offer, in the form of Bastille, The Strypes and The 1975 to name a few. If that wasnt enough, these purveyors of maritime merriment will be ensuring you always have a good time by hosting everything from cabaret in the Grand Palace of Entertainment, to outrageous adventures in Bollywood - with 10 fields of happenings Bestival is not one to miss. To make sure you look your best when you set sail for Bestival this year, weve come up with some ideas for nautical looks.
