  • 90s Trend Alert: Rebel Girls and Rude Boys

When we get nostalgic about the 90s, we want to resurrect the days of Rebel Girls and Rude Boys. A style and attitude which is unforgivable. uncompromising, and completely unforgettable!

A post punk era, where rebellion was rife, brought us the evolution of grunge. Grunge wasn’t just a boys game, the girls came in kicking and screaming with such bands as Hole, L7, and Luna Chicks rocking the scene. They ended up getting a name as the riot grrrrls. The bad ass attitude of a rebel girl was totally reflected by their bad ass style. As well as a generous amount of eye makeup, these ladies had the look on lock down, with slip dresses, leather jackets, slogan tees and chunky boots.

Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt (via pinterest) Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt (via pinterest)

The look is still dominating our catwalks with a fresh feminist attitude. Clio Peppiatt and Dior brought out looks that showed us that girl power is still as alive and kicking as it was when riotgrrrls were waving the flag. Marques Almeida, Louis Vuitton and Versus Versace also allowed for the 90s rebel girl attitude to shine through and reminded us that femininity has no bounds and wears leather!

Versus Versace SS17 (via vogue) Versus Versace SS17 (via vogue)

Our slip dress selection will want to get you shouting like a rebel girl! And teamed with a leather jacket - you’ll have the look and the attitude determined to cause a stir!

For the men, we are calling for a rudeboy revival. The 90s came and we saw the mixture of grunge culture, rocksteady influence and authentic british punk roots for a unique style which can easily be worn today. Not quite a skinhead and not quite Kurt Cobain, the laid back look mixes tough textures such as denim and Doc Martens with relaxed streetwear such as bomber jackets and plaid shirts creating the 90s rudeboy trend.

Original Rude Boy style (via pinterest) Original Rude Boy style (via pinterest)

This menswear look translates well on today’s catwalks, the heavy subcultural influence is reworked in modern way yet keeps it’s gritty toughness it had when worn on the streets of the UK over the decades. MSGM, Markus Lupfer and Vetements all had some rudeboy influence in their recent Men’s Fashion Week collections- an indicator that this look is still as classic as its origins.

Recreating this look is as easy as it comes. Head online to find an original bomber jacket, from a military A1 flight bomber to a 90s rave bomber...

Then the trick is to layer with jersey tees and classic plaid shirts and finish it all off with vintage Levis and Doc Martens.

So there it is - the 90s- An unforgettable era with an unforgettable style legacy held on by our style icons the Rebel Girls and Rude Boys. Still as relevant and still as loud, the trend is a big pull of inspiration for us and we can’t wait to see more of our Beyond Retro customers making this look their own.

  • 90s Denim

FINALLY, the long awaited sequel to Danny Boyle’s definitive 90s masterpiece Trainspotting is hitting cinemas this Friday. The story of four Edinburgh heroin addicts remains a classic and has had us feeling nostalgic of one of the greatest 90s trends of all time – Denim. Even in Trainspotting when the characters’ lives were falling apart their jeans certainly were not!

Trainspotting 1996 (glasgowist) Trainspotting 1996 (glasgowist)

This has got us remembering some of our favourite 90s looks and inspired us to take a look at some of the countless, unique denim items we have at Beyond Retro. We’ve narrowed it down to a few!

The mom jean in light wash was a classic laid back look worn best by supermodels such as Kate Moss. The original Levi 501 still remains a wardrobe staple!
Kate Moss (pinterest) Kate Moss (pinterest)

Shop our selection of mom jeans here!

Denim jackets were everywhere in the 90s – worn oversized and usually teamed with even more denim, they add a fresh sense of youthfulness to a look. A look that reminds us of our favourite 90s sweethearts who wore them oh so well. From Leonardo Dicaprio in Basketball Diaries to a fresh faced Drew Barrymore and Winona Ryder, they knew how to rock the denim jacket.

    Steal their look here!

Another way 90s denim made a statement was with the full dungaree, probably rocked best by Rachel Green from friends and the coolest of girl bands, TLC, dungarees are a 90s denim staple which are hard to forget and will most certainly not be forgotten by us anytime soon.
Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green in FRIENDS (pinterest) Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green in FRIENDS (pinterest)

We have a similar selection here

Reminiscing on 90s denim has got us remembering its timeless stylistic quality. Whether it’s worn with polo shirts and bomber jackets like our favourite Edinburgh boys in Trainspotting or doubled up like the superstars of that day and age – it works and it can work now too. There’s so much denim out there to be re-owned, reworked and mixed up to fit your own unique style and with all this 90s nostalgia in the air now may be the perfect time to test it out.

  • Gifting Season : Wool and the Gang

Give the gift of creation with a Wool and the Gang DIY kit.

Unique, fun and handmade… by you! And guess what? It’s all sustainably created, so no guilty conscience. Wool and the Gang have reintroduced knitting into our lives, so you don't have to be retired to whack out the needles and start creating.
We have 5 styles in store and online to choose from, all you have to do is buy a kit and learn to knit!

Image: Wool and The Gang Image: Wool and The Gang

We spoke to co-founder Jade Harwood to find out a little more about WATG.

Tell me a little about how WATG came about..
It all started with an interest in sustainability in fashion. Myself and Aurelie Popper studied textile design at Central St. Martins, and this is where we fell in love with knitting. We wanted to break the knitting mold and build a sense of community around sustainable fashion.

Where does the main source of inspirations come from for your designers?
All over the place really. We try and keep up to date with the trends and what people want to wear, but because people are investing time into making these items themselves, we want to make sure they can last beyond the season. Starting with the essence of our name we’re really inspired by music culture. A lot of our product names have a music reference ie...Shiny Happy Cotton = REM...Crazy Sexy Wool = TLC. :) It’s also inspiring seeing what people like to make and what people enjoy most using hashtag #shareyourknits

Have you faced any challenges with setting up a sustainable fashion company?
Of course we have - what is business without challenges? I’d say a big one is trying to remain competitive in the world of fast fashion. While a lot of people may like the idea of buying higher quality, it can often come down to the price tag and convenience. Knitting up a jumper just isn’t as convenient as buying one off the high street - but they definitely are still valued differently.
Image: Wool and the Gang Jungle Love Plant Hanger Image: Wool and the Gang Jungle Love Plant Hanger

What does sustainable fashion mean to you?
Sustainable fashion means being aware of what goes into the clothes on your back- knowing how the fibres, the design, and the creation all affect the environment around us.

Any crazy plans moving forward with WATG?
We don’t like to give too much away - it’s more fun to keep people on their toes! But we will continue to collaborate with other brands that share similar messages as well as grow our own brand to better the experience with our current and future customers around the world.

How have you seen the sustainable fashion industry change/develop in the past few years?
I feel that environmentally friendly and sustainable fashion are making waves now. It’s nice to see various brands on the high street starting to incorporate it into their business practices - from fibre choices to recycling packaging and everything in between. When people raise their voices and bring attention to the cause, companies are going to try and join the conversation, and that’s nice to see.

Finally, any hints or tips for all of us who are trying to make our wardrobe more sustainable?
While it may be hard, don’t buy into trends as much. Keeping things minimal and relevant to your wardrobe and not just this season is key. You don’t have to invest a ton of money on your clothes, but do think about whether or not you plan on wearing all these pieces come next year. And of course, knit something unique to you.

  • Gifting Season : Kapdaa

Hitting our gifting wish list this festive season is Kapdaa, beautifully hand crafted notebooks made of recycled vintage off-cuts from our Design Archive. We spoke to Kapdaa founder Nishant Parekh to find out a little more about this sustainable company.

Tell me a little about how Kapdaa came about..
Kapdaa means 'cloth' in Hindi. It was these small pieces of off-cuts, that I found in my Mum's design studio back in India that caught my curiosity. I felt it was such a shame that the off-cuts with such beautiful designs were going to waste. This thought stayed with me until I came to the UK, finished my program at UAL and finally I decided to start Kapdaa The Off-Cut Company. We help designers turn their waste into luxury marketing products, with our notebooks being our hero product.
Beyond Retro Archive Notebooks Beyond Retro Archive Notebooks

Have you faced any challenges with setting up a sustainable company?
On a daily basis! Any new idea, or unique concept in the market faces it’s set of challenges. The limitations of setting up a company and keeping it 'sustainable' is an entrepreneur's given. Our biggest challenge at Kapdaa is that we are not only encouraging sustainability but most importantly we start by educating our clients that there is a sustainable option! We help our clients understand that with choosing us, they are choosing the option to not let their designs go to waste. It’s a step ahead for the brand, where finally their customers feel proud of the choices their favourite brands make.

What does sustainability mean to you?
For us at Kapdaa sustainability is as simple as the 'ability' to 'sustain'. We use a local family run courier companies in UK and India, from airport to factory. We source all our raw materials locally too, also we use screen printing rather than digital to support craftsmen. Not only this but we also look to employ anyone who would like to join us with no prior experience, as we offer training through various roles. The paper we source is FSC regulated. So it's not only a sustainable product but an entire sustainable process.

    Photo 30-11-2016, 14 45 58
    'Every Piece Matters’
Every piece that makes you, who you are 'matters’
    Every choice you make ‘matters'
Every fashionable choice you make 'matters' the most
Today what 'fashionably matters' is SUSTAINABILITY

Any crazy plans moving forward with Kapdaa?
All of us at Kapdaa are crazy and stubborn, obsessed with the idea of product innovation and sustainability. So we will constantly have a fresh perspective to existing product or finding new ways of using waste. Recently we have just started adding images to the inside of the notebooks, making it a combination of a look book and a notebook. We like to call it Noticeable notebooks. Images tell the story from inception to final creation and inspiring you to pen down your thoughts in that very notebook.
Also in the pipeline is our new product, coffee cup sleeves. Now, off cuts will dress up your favourite mugs and reflect your personality, to stylishly flaunt a fashionably sustainable choice. Finally, we have also been sent off cuts of steel & rubber from couple of companies, so watch the space :)

Beyond Retro Archive Notebooks Beyond Retro Archive Notebooks

How have you seen the sustainable industry change/develop in the past few years?
Yes, very much so, but this pushes us more to keep on going! People are very much aware of the term sustainability now and that's a great start. They might not know how to go about it, but many lovely bloggers and social media groups are writing, speaking and interacting with the movement now. Cross promotion is the key here, I believe everyone that deals with the issues of sustainability need to not only support, but promote the idea on social media, as they have more followers and a bigger reach. They have the power to educate and influence more consumers to make a sustainable choice.

Where is your favourite place to shop Eco-friendly?
Luckily, India is a country that grows organic cotton and for generations we have used natural fibers for our daily wear. So independent boutiques and cottage industry shops are places where we shop. Here in the UK because of the kind of business we are, we come across a lot of ethical labels that are usually available online as they are also entrepreneurs. Also flea markets are a big favourite among the Kapdaa team!

Finally, any hits or tips for all of us who are trying to make our lives more sustainable?
It's time we turn from 'fashionably conscious' to 'consciously fashionable' people. It all starts with the shift in the thought process and everything follows, as people like Kapdaa, Beyond Retro and many others are here to offer you solution to live more sustainable.

Kapdaa's notebook collection, created using our rare archive fabrics, will be available in-store and online, perfect for a Christmas stocking filler with a unique story!

  • Gifting Season: Bags

Alongside our incredible array of original vintage handbags you see in store and online, we also host an amazing selection of new product that we source from far and wide just for you guys!

We have been lucky enough this festive season to stock Tile Cat, who create one-off hand embroidered backpacks and purses. These bags are all hand made in Karkam, a small town in Tibet, China.

So, how does it work? Well the technique is called Miao embroidery, three-dimensional the stitches become knotted, overlapped and uniquely created. Each pattern is based on traditional plants or patterns from the region, along with this each pattern holds a special meaning. For example, bat means lucky, fish and peony means wealth, phoenix means queen.

Sadly the use of the art of traditional embroidery is declining, so Tile Cat see it as their mission to help revive this old tradition from its gradual extinction.

We asked the designer where their inspiration came from:
'As a designer I choose to do embroidery because of my family background, my ancestors originate from this small town, and as a young girl I remember my great-grandfather telling me magical stories, this then got me interested in the tradition of colour embroidery.'

Looking for somethings smaller? Tile Cat have made us our very own Beyond Retro exclusive headbands. Handmade, each one will be embroidered with love and care, the perfect festive gift!

Going forward we’re on a mission to move our entire new product range to items made from recycled or upcycled materials. Do you have a product with a recycled, upcycled or reclaimed element that you would like to sell at Beyond Retro? We want to hear from you!

This year we’ve decided to launch a new initiative to expand our sustainable message and product offering. As many of you eagle-eyed shoppers will know, we currently offer a range of vintage inspired new products in-store and online alongside our classic vintage and upcycled LABEL garms. Going forward we’re on a mission to move our entire new product range to items made from recycled or upcycled materials. This is an exciting new initiative and we invite you to come along on the journey with us. Our aim is simple - we want to bring our customers affordable and high quality products sourced with intent and care. It’s not going to happen overnight, but we’re excited to see where this idea will take us!

With this in mind, we want to hear from you. Yes, YOU! We are asking our customers and our community for submissions from brilliant and innovative ideas. Do you have a product with a recycled, upcycled or reclaimed element that you would like to sell at Beyond Retro? Or perhaps you have an idea for something that you think we'll love? As ever, we’re approaching this with an open mind, so if you want to be part of creating this story with us then have a look below and get in touch!

Beyond Retro was started almost fifteen years ago with the aim of building a more sustainable world. In the years since, we’ve been lucky enough to emerge as the biggest vintage retailer in the UK and Sweden, and we owe it to you - fabulous and loyal customers!

Although there’s no denying that we adore lurex blouses and 90’s bomber jackets, what really goes to the heart of our company is a desire to combat the worrying trend of fast-fashion that’s taking such a huge toll on our world. To put it simply, we’re all using far too much stuff and this needs to change.

All of the clothes on our shop floor or website are handpicked from all over the world by our expert pickers. These pickers sort through 93 million pounds of clothing every year - that’s over 60 Olympic swimming pools worth of material! From this, we buy roughly 22,000 kilos every month, with the money going towards good causes. As for all the stuff that you guys didn’t love enough to take home, well that either gets donated to charity or sold in bulk. So in short - everything goes back into the system one way or another.

And did we stop there? Of course not! We realised that only 1 out of every 1000 items that we were sorting through was making it to our vintage department. We found ourselves in a pickle - how do we save more garments from landfill? Launched in 2012, Beyond Retro LABEL is a collection that is entirely custom-made from re-worked vintage pieces and fabrics. In a world of throwaway fashion, LABEL is a new and ethical approach to producing amazing and unique clothing. We design and make over 100,000 LABEL items each year, saving an unbelievable 600,000 items from landfill!
