‘Project Recycle’ at Beyond Retro with Supersweet!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

From a young age, yours truly, has been quite obsessed with fashion magazines in all their over the top, out of this world, trash-glam glory! Naturally, I jumped at the chance for Beyond Retro to be involved in turning the inspirational, cultural transcripts of ‘Supersweet’ magazine into divine works of fashion-inspired art! And display them right here at Beyond Retro’s Cheshire Street store!

You are invited to help turn the 1000 + back issues of ‘Supersweet’ magazine into a collage or exciting 3-D sculpture, by donning your D.I.Y design head and coming up with an imaginative way to wear your fashion dreams, quite literally, on your sleeves! Old magazine cut-outs, clever paper sculpting, a pair of scissors and unlimited imagination means design history may simply be in the making! Come up with a new brand of shoe silhouette, a rock’n'roll dress pattern or a head turning hat!

Come February (2010, yikes!), our bi-monthly East End Lights project will illuminate the creative, outrageous and downright beautiful ideas of fashion’s future protagonists, by displaying the most original winning entries within its statement exterior lightboxes and around our Cheshire Street store.

So pick up a few back copies (maximum of 7) of ‘Supersweet’ from one of Beyond Retro’s London stores and get creative!

Magazines in store now! Stashed under the counter for safe-keeping, so be sure to ask the floor staff!

Closing date for completed entries is February 2010. Find out more details and competition rules by logging on here: tinyurl.com/Project-Recycle-Art

This project is run in association with Beyond Retro, Total Image Nation and Supersweet Digital.

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Expect a lot of spooky shenanigans as we kickstart our Halloween Extravanagza this Thursday, at Cheshire Street! We’re so excited about the chance to dress up and be decadent, we have invited along some frighteningly good friends to help us celebrate!

First up, is the awesome Charlie le Mindu, who has created some showstopping artworks for our outdoor East End Lights lightboxes. Weaving together elements of sculpture, architecture and theatre, his work will make you stop dead in your tracks!

Also, on hand with some spooky haircutting surprises will be the brilliant Parlour Macabre! Beware! A swoosh of her magical scissors can transform the scariest of haircuts to something beautiful! She’s sharpening those scissors for Thursday night, so you are guaranteed to leave looking your ghoulsih best! (or worst!)

Parlour Macabre will be cutting hair at Beyond Retro on the night!

And the party doesn’t stop there! Our celebrations continue on Friday 23rd October at our store on Great Marlborough Street, in Soho, with live bands and fabulous shopping until late!

Our very own Ida Jacobsson, Assistant Manager at the Soho store, will be providing a lush backdrop of sunshine pop melodies with her gorgeous band, We Walk on Ice. The indie duo are the perfect blend of dark and light, just the right side of spooky for your Halloween shopping! Also playing are twisted folk set-up The Lost Cavalry.

East End Lights this Thursday!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Tattoo Deluxe at East End Lights, Thursday 27th August, 2009 at our Cheshire Street store

Tattoo art gets turned on its head at Beyond Retro this summer. The spectacular East End series continues with a dazzling expose of a culture that is too often misrepresented.

Tattoo Lords (and Ladies!) drawn from some of London’s most notorious bespoke parlours and independent inkers, line up to provide popular inspiration and entertainment.

The distinct exterior lightboxes will house individual art inventions that displace traditional readings of tattoo art. Instead, we have Simon Erl detailing death, beauty and rock ‘n’ roll, Mo Coppoletta from The Family Business subverting kitsch iconography. Then, get ready for the fashion spin. Couture designer, Ian Frazer Wallace, creates custom corsets donning impressive images, like the beguiling Polly. Pin up girl, muse and anti-heroine with a high octane kick.

History is looming, but the dark, macabre associations are replaced by something far more illuminating.
